About Sever

Sever is an independent RTS game at its core, but it's a new take on the RTS genre.  Instead of commanding independent units to attack one another, you create a system of routes and attempt to overpower your opponent's routes.  Watch this video to get an idea:

Your route system is a hierarchical series of nodes connected by lines.  These lines cannot intersect each other.  When one of your routes intersects an opponent's, the opponent's route is split, slowly destroying everything beyond it.

At the beginning of a game, you start with two parent nodes.  These are at the top of the hierarchy and are what keep your system alive.  When the segment connecting the two parent nodes is split, your entire system is destroyed.  Needless to say, this is what your opponent intends to do, if you don't do it to him first.

Routes are built by small points of light that are generated by your parent nodes at a regular rate.  When you plan a new segment to be built, the points of light are directed into it, and every time one reaches the end, the length of the segment is incremented.  This continues until it is 100% complete.

This idea has been bouncing around in my head since around 2006-2007.  I've started it numerous times, but never got very far until now.  I plan to take it all the way this time.  Looking forward, I'm still playing with all the little variables of the game, trying to make it as fun as possible.  In the finished game, the routes might build faster or slower, the maps may be small or may be sprawling with all kinds of obstacles to build your routes around, etc.  I need to keep experimenting to see what is the most fun for this kind of game.  Really, I'm just exploring the concept to find out how the game should be, rather than imposing my pre-conceived ideas on the mechanics (thank you Jonathan Blow).

Please stick with me as I slowly build the game.  At this early stage, I really have no time-frame, so I understand if you don't, but if you do, feel free to tell your friends about it.  Comment on my posts and videos.  Give me feedback.  I want to know if anyone is actually interested in this game.

Thanks,
clevceo
